Read the sky like a clock.

Pherkad is the star in the Little Dipper's bowl opposite the handle. Once you know today's ring, imagine a line from Polaris through Pherkad to the hour marks to read the time outside. About a month from now, the same clock hours will have shifted roughly two hours around the ring as the stars rise earlier each night.
